By now you would have seen photos on social media of a Chery Omoda 5 with its rear axle completely detached, which purportedly happened in Johor Bahru last week.
Well, the road transport department (JPJ) has broken the silence by announcing a temporary suspension on the Chery Omoda 5’s vehicle type approval (VTA), thereby halting new registrations of the model until the technical investigation is concluded and safety risks are identified.
“This action will be implemented in a targeted manner, focusing on the potentially affected models and variants,” JPJ said in a statement, adding that Chery Malaysia is required to identify all potentially affected vehicle units based on part numbers, production batches, chassis numbers (vehicle identification number – VIN) and relevant technical parameters.
“A recall must be carried out for all vehicles identified as being at risk, for the purpose of inspection and appropriate corrective action,” said the statement.
JPJ will also conduct a technical audit of the Chery Omoda 5’s production and assembly line, and the relevant axle component supplier. This audit will cover compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), quality control systems, weld joint inspection procedures and the safety standards of the components used.
It added that the suspension will only be lifted once all corrective and preventive actions have been fully implemented, and technical verification has been obtained from JPJ confirming that all safety risks have been adequately addressed.
Two years ago, an Omoda 5’s rear axle detached on the move. Chery Malaysia promptly recalled 600 units even before JPJ issued its statement. The carmaker said a miscalibrated welding tip was the root cause and that it found 60 units produced on August 15, 2023 to have the affected parts. Just a week later, axle replacement appointments had been made with all 60 of those owners, and the case was declared closed in June 2024 – about three months from start to finish.
Note that the Omoda 5 is a discontinued model. It was replaced in September 2025 by the Chery O5, which has a multi-link rear suspension instead of the Omoda 5’s torsion beam. The O5 remains on sale.

The cybertroopers even used hashtags that said #Cheryleads and #TrustChery LOLLL
“Kemaluan saya amat besar.” – Chery
Remember when the first broken torsion beam incident happened? Chery’s cybertroopers were out on full force on the Internet. Using different pseudonyms but the same cut and paste comments that go something like “Good job Chery Malaysia at your fast response. I have confidence in this company, this is what good customer service looks like”, etc.
Strange. No cybertroopers this time around.
For the first time in history carmakers recalled affected cars sold in Malaysia. Previously, everywhere in the world.got.recall but Malaysian same car not even affected. The reputation been hit again and again.

Suspend the VTA got use kah? As the article pointed out, the model is discontinued and superseded by the facelift model, which should have new VTA. Surely Chery not selling this discontinued model anymore. Is JPJ shiok sendiri?
Where’s the crowd that usually hypes up Chinese cars? Did everyone just disappear overnight?
Duplicate comment detected; it looks as though you’ve already said that.
The suspense of a suspension being suspended.
Chery and Co packing up for 2nd round exit Marehsia market KEK
This is the biggest problem with China brands, price dumping, quality and passenger safety not priority just want to sell more. Until someone is sacrifice only they will learn?
Bye bye chery..
Thought this was going to get sweep under the carpet soon, good job JPJ.
Kalau tengok komplen dalam sosmed pasal after sales service pun teruk kalau kereta ada apa² problem.
With the latest Chinese wheel ejection system, changing car tyre has never been easier. Bravo to new tech.
Estimated almost 20,000 Omoda 5 sold,
Now 2 KO dy. It’s good JPJ stop work order now.
I think the worst award could be the Perodua Bezza’s sugar engine?
Now JPJ take action, maybe we don’t need Lemon law already?
Luckily not buy when first launched because dont like the front grill villain alike design.
I think Chery doesn’t care because they are a big company in China (hence the lack of communication by them the past few days of this issue).. The real victims here are the buyers, where most of them are taking 9 years loan, with this fiasco you can say goodbye to their car values down the road..
Habis.. the death knell for Chery’s second attempt at the Malaysian market.
Pity the O5 owners. Their cars will have absolutely no resale value and they’ll really have to keep them till the wheels fall off.
As for the second hand car dealers with these in their lots? Good luck.. might as well sell them to scrap metal dealers..
this China company, many years ago entered Malaysia then left abruptly, causing many issues and loss to their buyers. now, their quality is as good as a backyard illegal PATI kereta-potong used by illegals. i really cant brain why anyone with even half a brain would touch anything under Chery group anymore. even with 50% discount and 20 years warranty unlimited mileage and free service i wouls never buy this toxic brand
Buy 1 Omoda 5 free xtra rear axle!
if they can messed up a simple torsion beam, they definitely could do the same with multilink
What an indirect way of saying something quite shocking!
A newish EV had the rear axle fall off at speed.
“Chery Omoda 5 with its rear axle completely detached”
