Penang is aiming for 600 EV charging bays in the state by 2030, up from 200-300 currently, according to a report by the Malay Mail. Looks like the target has been pushed forward by five years – it was reported only last year that 600 by end-2025 was the goal.
“The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is rolling out EV charging stations around the city, but only in the few hundreds, not into the thousands yet,” Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow was quoted as saying on the sidelines of the Penang Autoshow 2026.
He added that public buildings and shopping centres are converting some parking bays into EV charging bays. “However, for residential buildings, such as apartments and condominiums, there are safety issues to consider,” he said.
Chow said in his speech that EV adoption in Malaysia must move in tandem with industry participation, technological readiness and policy alignment. “EV sales more than doubled to over 30,000 units in 2025, reflecting strong year-on-year growth, though still representing a small share of total vehicle sales,” he said.

600 EV chargers in the state only? How to support large scale transition to EV cars? Just do simple maths…how many petrol pumps are there in the state against estimated number of cars in Malaysia?
your name suits you . the 600 number does not include private home chargers.
600 public chargers not counting private home chargers
EVs are usually driven by civilized folks, and penang is the most cultured state in malaysia
penang should consider self governing, collecting and spending tax money within their own state, same goes to johor and borneo states, leave other racist states to rot on their own
When it comes to ” High Rise flats, etc ” Standard SOP from BOMBA is…”Safety Concerns”. Does Singapore have such… EXCUSES ? Singapore solves the problems and provided the necessary Chargers. Penang/Malaysia can LEARN from SINGAPORE.
negara kecik senang diurus , so says the local politicians
Public EV charger outside my house in Balik Pulau, already more than 1 year still cannot be used. I don’t know what the F the contractor is doing!
Georgetown actually have quite a lot of DC chargers, in fact most of the times these DC chargers are underutilised. Based on the location of the chargers, it looks like the target users are tourist from other states. You cant expect the user to park and charge after 20 minutes jalan-jalan have to come back and move the car. You need a mix of DC and AC chargers, not majority DC.
those idiot companies like to install DC chargers in cities , only reason is so that they can boast in a press release about having fast chargers in a famous area, but it is highway pitstops who need DC chargers the most
