Gov’t in talks with highway operators to integrate ANPR system to check vehicles for valid road tax

According to a report by China Press citing The Edge, transport minister Anthony Loke said the government is in discussions with highway operators to use automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to identify whether a vehicle has a valid road tax and insurance.

Loke also pointed out the government is pushing for the MyJPJ app to be integrated with highway infrastructure, and that talks are ongoing with major concessionaires like PLUS and Amanat Lebuhraya Rakyat to widen adoption of ANPR technology.

The idea is to create a seamless process at toll plazas, with payments deducted directly from e-wallets linked to the MyJPJ app. This would reduce cases of toll evasion while also reducing the need for manual checks.

He added that the MyJPJ app was initially launched to replace physical documentation (driver licence and road tax sticker) but has now evolved into a more feature-rich digital platform that allows for renewals as well as payment of fines.

Deeper integration marks the next phase of the MyJPJ app, which will also see the Kejara demerit points system be brought into the app in the second half of 2026 so drivers can check how many points they have accumulated.

Voters should get rid of all politicians who work against the citizens. We the citizens vote the politician there to give us a better living environment. The cost of living has gone up so high and we have this imposed on the citizen using integreted systems to fine us and get as much money from us as possiblefor our mistake.

What about the politicians mistake – corruption, gaji buta, parliamentary absenteeism, etc

There is no automatic renewal of your expired road tax and thus no automatic deduction from your e-wallet. You still need to manually do the renewal before the expiry date.

  • Implement one first then integrate the next one. We’ve been talking about launching anpr for like 5+ years yet still using old methods for toll. Still keep on talking but no progress.

Eh macam mana ni…prebet kompeni got access to gomen data without rakyat consent…manyak fishy

The agenda is clear…gomen wants to know your every move. Toll evasion is toll kompeni pasal to track and report to JPJ/PDRM however the law provides for this offence to be prosecuted. Lokie still busy trying to short circuit our legal system. Always touting convenience at the cost of freedom of movement.

    • If this involves the use or disclosure of personal data, then it should first be assessed against the spirit of the PDPA — particularly on necessity, proportionality, and lawful purpose. Otherwise, the burden of compliance and penalties will simply be transferred to highway concessionaires, who will eventually recover those costs through toll structures or compensation claims. In the end, it is once again the rakyat who bears the consequences

The gomen can still track u by triangulating your mobile phone with the cell towers.
And if u don’t want private companies to access your private data, start by not opening a bank account. Banks are part of the private sector too.

Apparently they haven’t thought about clones plates on same car model, same color. One day, you will suddenly realized you are paying tolls for someone else and it has been going on for very long time. How do you claim it back? On certain occasion, you might be able to proof (e.g. You are driving on another highway) for the rest, how to proof it’s not your car?
