Works ministry to review issue of 12 highway concessionaires recording losses in 2024 – Nanta

The works ministry will conduct a detailed review of the issue of 12 out of 33 highway concessions having recorded losses due to low traffic volume last year, reported Bernama. A thorough discussion is necessary as the matter has significant financial implications for the country, said works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

“I cannot make a hasty statement, as the financial impact is substantial. Please be patient; once we have examined all the details, only then can we issue an official statement,” he said yesterday. Earlier, deputy works minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan has said in the Dewan Rakyat that 12 toll concessionaires in Malaysia recorded losses in 2024.

These include the Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Expressway (MEX), the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway (KLK) and the East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1), the Stormwater Management And Road Tunnel (SMART), the Kemuning-Shah Alam Highway (LKSA), the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) and the Damansara-Shah Alam Elevated Expressway (DASH).

Also on the list were the Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE), the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE), the Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway (SPE), the Kajang-Seremban Highway (LEKAS), the West Coast Expressway (WCE) and the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR).

“Anyone proposing new highways must calculate traffic and financial projections carefully. If traffic volume is insufficient, revenue will not cover operating costs, and eventually, the government will have to bear the losses when taking over the concession,” Ahmad Maslan said in reply to Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan, who asked about toll concessions’ performance.

  • When the corportaion losess money is a big problem for government to investigate, but when they raises tol prices no one will fight for rakyat. All politician are useless and serving their master.

These operators though to have done a proper impact study when they proposed to built yet now said are making loss. Some of the highways toll rate are too expensive. MOT should take up some of the highways and convert into BRT or ART routes to encourage more public transportation usage but at the end its all about making money and using taxpayers money to bail out.

While you’re at it, review every signature on every submission and approval document. Send MACC after all of them and audit their financials for the last 30 years. Because every gomen likes to talk about how they are subsidising toll, so if these highways are making losses then indirectly the taxpayer is still paying for it whether they use the highways or not. So is the easiest way to transfer money from treasury as simple as putting together a highway proposal? Cos it sure seems that way.

Since when is it the govt’s (meaning taxpayers’) problem? Did the govt sign the agreement to compensate them? So, when they make money, it’s theirs, but when they lose, it’s not their problem?

          • That is why when BN under PM Najib wanted to abolish tolls in stages, Tun went over to PH bringing all the highway cronies with him and when PH won they conviniently forgotten their promise to abolish tolls. Remember it was PM Najib the only PM that was abolishing tolls so to remove all tolls we need to bring Najib back as PM under BN.

          • The PM6 administration agreed to pay MRCB RM1.325 billion as compensation to end the Johor EDL toll, and pay RM2.2 billion to PLUS as compensation to end the Kedah Bukit Kayu Hitam toll and the Selangor Batu Tiga & Sungai Rasau tolls on the Federal Highway. It was estimated that it would cost the government RM30 billion to end all highway tolls. May be PM6 had thought he could get it from 1MDB if he wanted to avoid raising taxes especially GST..

          • Tolls only started under Tun and Anwar and both went to PH so all the evils have been transferred to PH cleansing BN again. We should give BN the chance seeing that PH has failed and rakyat suffering with more tolls.

When CEO earning 50k a month, perhaps more. What can you expect from a loss making company? What about the board of directors? GM? COO, CFO? Cap the max salary limit to 20k per month for all of them until the company starts making money.

Cost is fixed regardless of traffic. Reduce the toll charges to increase usage. If toll reduce 50% but usage increase 3x or more is still a better outcome.
