MEX, Karak, LPT1, SMART, DASH, SUKE, SKVE, SPE, WCE, LEKAS highways ran losses in 2024 – A. Maslan

Deputy works minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan has said in the Dewan Rakyat that 12 toll concessionaires in Malaysia recorded losses in 2024, reports the New Straits Times.

These include the Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Expressway (MEX), the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway (KLK) and the East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1), the Stormwater Management And Road Tunnel (SMART), the Kemuning-Shah Alam Highway (LKSA), the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) and the Damansara-Shah Alam Elevated Expressway (DASH).

The list also includes the Senai-Desaru Expressway (SDE), the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE), the Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway (SPE), the Kajang-Seremban Highway (LEKAS), the West Coast Expressway (WCE) and the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR).

“In conclusion, anyone proposing new highways must calculate traffic and financial projections carefully. If traffic volume is insufficient, revenue will not cover operating costs, and eventually, the government will have to bear the losses when taking over the concession,” Ahmad Maslan said in reply to Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan, who asked about toll concessions’ performance.

Then stop approving new highways lah. All those trees gone forever, everywhere botak, no wonder now got “musim panas” in Malaysia with barely any rain. Then come monsoon season, nothing left to absorb water so banjir lah, landslide la, kereta tenggelam etc etc. Insurance costs through the roof. Then gomen surprise pikachu face while developers laugh in their mansions.

Whose mistake?? Lower down tolls , ultimately profitable, simple solution, learn to solve problems in long term but for that needs to be well educated which all ministers r not

Stop building highways and start improving the bloody public transport. Have these ministers try taking the LRT during peak hours? Friggin jam packed. Should have gone with MRT from the beginning instead.

  • These are what we called infrastructures, for the benefit of the people. In the first place, these infrastructures should be built with the objective of serving the people, for convenience and development. But since our government from day 1 let private companies to run all these highways with profit as their priority , and they fail miserably, why not government rethink their approach? More roads built should be traffic much at ease, but the truth is, we pay tolls to rush into another traffic jam, and the connectivity is never great either.

  • Mex losing money? Impossible. Everyday jam during peak hours.
The rest are mostly new highways to early to gauge. But if traffic is low its due to high toll charges.
Gomen losing money even on profitable highways as it subsidise any toll inceases.due to this, older highways are way cheaPer than new ones.

Then gov should open tender for trains or mrt to the developer instead of highways. Look at Japan, half of the trains track & stations are developed by non gov company and they are earning profit. Why? Cause they build mall, shops or even attractions near or on top their stations to make sure customers will use their trains. They are not making money from tickets but from rentals.

  • loss making? did the director and owner and management bringing home fat paycheck? they just dig money? ask gov to pay their luxury life?

  • Toll too expensive, for example I’m from puchong taking all highway heading to tol gombak, I’ll be charged RM12++ for toll only..does it make it quicker? sort of, it shorten the time around 10 min during peak hour..does it worth it ? nahhh

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 0
  • They’re posting losses because of their mismanagement and gross incompetence. It has nothing to do with drivers not using their highways.

Most people don’t begin their trip by actively choosing to avoid toll. They use Waze/Google Maps to take them to their destination in the quickest way possible. That’s why highways are always crowded. So, if you still can’t be profitable, then maybe use AI to do the work of your CEO and Department Heads. You’ll definitely be more efficient and will save 100% of your coffee and karipap costs during redundant meetings.

  • Whose problem, if the highway concessionary are making loss? The concessionary proposes for a highway, do the modelling and calculates the investment and returns. If the Return Of Investment is negative, WHY do the project?

Thumb up 5 Thumb down 1
  • Good if no one use. Or else after paid still jam! Afterall, even if they earn money, right before contract end will use many excuses to extend it!
