Sarawak’s hydrogen-powered ART system

Remember this? Johor Bahru is supposed to get an autonomous rapid transit (ART) system to carry people to and away from Bukit Chagar, which will be the Malaysian terminus of the operational-by-2027 Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. Transport minister Anthony Loke said that ART development is ongoing and has not been delayed, Bernama reports.

He said the project is currently at the request-for-proposal (RFP) evaluation stage and is being refined by the Public-Private Partnership Unit (UKAS) after several proposals did not meet the required standards. “Of course, the ministry will work with UKAS to expedite the awarding process for the project,” he added.

“I am deeply concerned about the traffic congestion that is expected to arise once the RTS Link begins operation. To date, no comprehensive solution has been presented to accommodate the expected increase in traffic, including the implementation of an elevated autonomous rail transit (ART) system or other alternative transport options around the Bukit Chagar area.

Sarawak’s hydrogen-powered ART system

“The federal government has stated that there are insufficient funds to cover maintenance costs should a fully elevated system be implemented. Yet, Penang has been able to secure the LRT project, which is significantly more expensive than the ART system,” Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, the Regent of Johor said recently.

Johor public works, transport, infrastructure and communications committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh on Thursday urged the federal government to expedite ART, ideally by early next year, saying that the project is crucial to support public transport and streamline traffic flow before the RTS Link comes online.

Also called trackless trams, ART is essentially a bus that drives itself by reading road markings through light detection and ranging (LIDAR) – the term ‘elevated’ points towards it getting a dedicated roadway, without having to jostle with other traffic. Kuching is already building its ART and trials have been done in Putrajaya in the past.

Stupid BS. Johor ART is paid for by Johor Gomen while Penang multibillion dollar infrastructure is paid for by Sabah & Sarawak oil revenue. Is Anthony Loke transport minister of Penang? If so please resign NOW and go become penang minister!!!

penang lrt is partly funded by the creation of silicon island not to mention their massive E&E exports which contributes billions to federal revenues.
in fact sabah and sarawak oil revenue under the law was controlled solely by petronas and this is thanks to BN and to former PM from BN.

All the bodoh comment. ART is just a glorified bus . What is actually needed is feeder or shuttle buses with good frequency to disperse crowd away from the CIQ area. No need ber billion billion to solve problem. The biggest problem is those private cars hogging the roads waiting to pick up their families members arriving from Singapore.

    • I think you are the one. The elevated ART is cost effective and reliable enough to cater to commuters’ needs as the main line.
It may seem like a bus, as it runs on wheels on virtual tracks… but it is also more reliable than LRT as while it is electric powered but runs with batteries thus it does not breakdown in the middle of its route when there is a power outage.

China cities uses it. Kuching City will also use it.

    • Our bus drivers lack discipline and work ethics.they minum kopi and suddenly 3 or 4 buses of same number come at the same time. You miss that, wait one hour for the next group to arrive.

what they need are buses. the people in charge quite literally love to overcomplicate things…and for what? just get buses and roll with it. get ridership to go up then perhaps in the future once there is a need to expand public transport then do trains etc. but short term immediate solutions are buses. gosh it’s not rocket science. buses are perhaps even cheaper to purchase and maintain and take less space on the roads than whatever this is. sigh…

    • Penang should do the same then.

    • The volvo articulate buses can accommodate huge number of passe ger and designed with low floors. It is like two buses but have one driver snd ideally, one ticket collector to quicken embaration and disembarkation.

  • Cancel the wasteful LRT project in Penang. Penang does not need an LRT that costs RM14-17 billion. What Penang needs is just regular buses that can ease traffic congestion, and building an LRT is extremely wasteful because in the end, traffic jams in Penang will still happen anyway.

Singapore is bringing lotsa visitors via RTS skipping the jam @ Causeway but the new jam area will be @ CIQ which is already packed with narrow roads and no more space. No way they can entertain ART with the current settings. The whole place will be screwed. Should cancel the RTS project too and save billions of RM and let JB revert back to its kampung era

  • Minister SPIN…! Delayed but not delayed. Covering the fact Madani Govt does not want to release the RM7 billion fund needed.
Even though Johor contributed around RM49 billion a year to Fed Govt … and only receives a mere RM2 billion a year in return as allocation for development.
