At the 2016 Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-AMG announced that it will be producing a new hypercar with loads of F1 tech crammed into it. According to a CarAdvice report, this will include a powertrain that is almost identical to the one used in the company’s Formula 1 race car.

The F1 W07 packs a 1.6 litre V6 turbo engine, which is rev-limited to 15,000 rpm, and is supplemented by a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) system and electric drive. However, AMG boss Tobias Moers noted, “we run that (F1 engine) up to maybe 15,000 revs, maybe we’ll reduce it by a little bit for the road.”

Of course, it isn’t just about keeping the engine’s redline in check as there are other things to consider if you intend to shove a racing engine into a road-going car. Nonetheless, expect a power output around the 1,000 hp mark, which will allow it to compete against the other hypercar from Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing.

“We will have to change some things, but if you have a closer look at the Formula 1 engine and the demands – what they have now in the spec book – and you compare the loads of F1 cars we’re racing on track, and compare it to what we apply for a street-legal car which you use on the track, for sure it’s still different but it’s not that far away,” Moers explained.

He also added that the yet-unnamed AMG hypercar will be the “most efficient hybrid car ever,” suggesting that the KERS would be more aggressive in the car. Carbon-fibre construction is a definite, and the car’s design will include active aerodynamics as well.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 driver Lewis Hamilton will be involved in the dynamic development of the car, which will likely be revealed as a concept in 2017 to coincide with AMG’s 50th anniversary. The upcoming two-seat hypercar will be built exclusively in left-hand drive in limited numbers. Although the total volume has not been disclosed yet, Moers claims that there will be fewer than 300 units.
