2026 Proton eMas 7 CKD – local-assembly adds spec upgrades, price now under RM100k, RM6k cheaper

Proton has announced the introduction of the locally assembled (CKD) Proton eMas 7 EV, which goes on sale in two variants. This will emerge from Proton’s dedicated EV plant in Tanjong Malim, though production has yet to commence; roll-out and deliveries will be announced soon.

Priced at RM103,800 for the Prime, and RM119,800 for the Premium, the locally assembled duo is offered from the outset with a limited-time RM4,000 rebate which brings the prices to RM99,800 for the Prime, and RM115,800 for the Premium in Peninsular Malaysia.

Pricing in East Malaysia is RM102,800 for the Prime, and RM118,800 for the Premium. Compared to pricing at its launch in December 2024, this marks a price drop of RM6k for the Prime and RM4k for the Premium against their CBU versions.

The welcome benefit package is comprised of:

    • Complimentary 7 kW home charger worth RM1,500
    • Complimentary V2L (vehicle-to-load) adapter worth RM500
    • Five-year unlimited internet data plan worth RM1,800
    • Six-year, unlimited mileage vehicle warranty
    • Eight-year, 160,000 km high-voltage battery and component warranty
    • Exclusive Proton owner trade-in rebate worth RM5,000

The arrival of the locally assembled Proton eMas 7 EV also brings equipment updates for the 2026 model year. This brings the addition of a powered tailgate on the Prime variant, while the Premium variant gets upgrades to its ADAS suite.

This now gains evasive manoeuvre assist (upon triggering AEB, the vehicle will steer to avoid a collision), front cross traffic alert, and active lane change assist (activate the turn signal, and upon checking that the intended lane is clear of traffic, the vehicle will carry out the lane change automatically).

This still foregoes the larger battery introduced for the 2026 Geely Galaxy E5 in China, which gets a larger battery capacity at 68.39 kWh, for 13.6% more capacity versus the 60.22 kWh unit, to yield around 15.1% more range.

These ADAS upgrades include new hardware, which means that the new ADAS features will not be applicable via OTA on older examples of the eMas 7. The new hardware additions are three millimetre-wave radar units, located in front at the centre and corners of the vehicle.

Level 2 ADAS in both variants of the eMas 7 CKD is comprised of intelligent cruise control, ACC, AEB, forward collision warning, emergency brake assist, lane departure warning and prevention, emergency lane keep assist, rear collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, rear cross traffic braking, lane change safety warning, door open warning, traffic sign recognition, and leading vehicle departure alert.

Also on for the eMas 7 are rear parking sensors, 360-degree camera with 3D display, and auto door locking when the vehicle is driven; the Premium adds front parking sensors.

Key specification details for the locally assembled eMas 7 EV remain as before, with the Prime getting a 49.52 kWh Aegis short-blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that brings a WLTP-rated 345 km of range, 18-inch alloy wheels, a 15.4-inch 2.5K-resolution touchscreen display, Level 2 ADAS, and the aforementioned powered tailgate. The tonneau cover introduced last August continues to be present.

Stepping up to the Premium brings the larger capacity, 60.22 kWh Aegis short-blade LFP battery for a WLTP-rated 410 km of range, 19-inch alloy wheels, a 16-speaker Flyme audio system, head-up display, ventilated front seats, and the aforementioned additional ADAS features (evasive manoeuvre assist, front cross traffic alert, and active lane change assist).

Powertrain for both variants continues to be a front-axle motor producing 160 kW (218 PS) and 320 Nm, enabling the 0-100 km/h run in a claimed 6.9 seconds. the Prime can receive up to 80 kW DC charging while the Premium can take up to 100 kW DC, enabling both to attain a 30-80% recharge in 20 minutes; 11 kW AC charging yields a 10-100% charge in 4.9 hours for the Prime, and 6.1 hours for the Premium.

Exterior colours for the 2026 eMas 7 EV are Lithium White, Turquoise Green, Slate Grey, Platinum Silver, Quartz Rose, and Obsidian Black, while the interior gets upholstery in Indigo Blue. On a more limited basis, the Alabaster White interior upholstery colour can be selected, though this is limited to Premium variant units in Turquoise Green and Quartz Rose, according to Proton.

The 2026 Proton eMas 7 EV is now locally assembled, and goes on sale in two variants; the Prime at RM99,800, and the Premium at RM115,800; prices are on-the-road without insurance, after the RM4,000 rebate.

  • Proton eMas 7 in Singapore – detuned COE Category A version debuts with 136 PS, S$6,000 launch rebate

Proton eMas 7 in Singapore – detuned COE Category A version debuts with 136 PS, S$6,000 launch rebate

Just four months after launching the eMas 7 in Singapore, Proton is introducing a new variant of the electric SUV that conforms to the requirements of the island nation’s most affordable COE Category A. Debuting at the recent Singapore Motorshow, this model will help the carmaker better compete with the likes of Tesla and BYD, both of which have a fleet of Category A-compliant models.

Compared to the original 99-unit, Category B Founder’s Edition, the front motor has been detuned from 218 PS (160 kW) to 136 PS (100 kW). No other details have been divulged so far, but we assume that it will have the same torque (320 Nm), the same Aegis short blade LFP battery options (49.52 kWh for the Prime, 60.22 kWh for the Premium) and the same range figures (345 km for the Prime, 410 km for the Premium) as before.

Official distributor Vincar has yet to reveal prices as the car is only available for booking, but we can expect a circa-S$17,000 (around RM53,600) saving, going by current COE rates of around S$102,000 (RM321,600) for Category A and around S$119,000 (RM375,300) for Category B.

Proton eMas 7 in Singapore – detuned COE Category A version debuts with 136 PS, S$6,000 launch rebate

The Proton eMas 5 was also previewed at the Singapore Motorshow

As a refresher, the Founder’s Edition was priced at S$175,988 (RM555,000) for the Prime and S$179,888 (RM567,300) for the Premium. To sweeten the deal, the company offered a S$6,000 (RM18,900) rebate for those who booked the car during the event.

Proton also took the opportunity to preview the eMas 5, which only recently went on sale in Malaysia in late October. Since it produces a maximum of 116 PS (85 kW), it already conforms to the Category A limit and will thus qualify for the lower COE rate.

“The introduction of the 100 kW [eMas 7] for export markets demonstrates Proton’s readiness and adaptability to local regulatory needs and market demands, and going forward, it will be rolled out to other markets should there be a need for it,” said Proton International Corporation (PICSB) CEO Edmund Lim Meng Thong. “For 2026 we plan to grow export sales by strengthening our presence in current markets, exploring new countries, and introducing the latest Proton ICE and EV model offerings.”

Proton eMas 5 – 216 units delivered, 14.6k bookings; eMas 7 sales at 9,336 units in 2025, incl 659 exports

Proton has announced that it has delivered 216 units of its new eMas 5 as of December 31, just over two months from its October 30 launch. The cars were all handed over to their new owners – including our very own Hafriz Shah – at the end of the final month, closing the year on a high.

The national carmaker has a mountain of orders to clear, having amassed over 14,600 bookings thus far. The entry-level EV joins the eMas 7, which found 9,336 homes last year, including 8,677 units domestically and 659 units in export markets. This means that by the end of 2025, there are a total of 9,549 eMas vehicles on the road around the world – the vast majority in Malaysia, of course.

Pro-Net CEO Zhang Qiang said: “2025 marked an important head start for Proton eMas, not just in terms of growth, but in the real-world impact our vehicles are making every day. With 9,549 eMas vehicles now in operation, we are seeing how our eMas owners can contribute to cleaner air, quieter journeys and reduced fuel consumption through ordinary driving.

Proton eMas 5 – 216 units delivered, 14.6k bookings; eMas 7 sales at 9,336 units in 2025, incl 659 exports

“As we move into 2026, our focus remains on building on this head start by expanding our electric
offerings, strengthening charging and after-sales support, and ensuring that electric mobility remains
practical, accessible and rewarding wherever our vehicles operate.”

To recap, the eMas 5 is available in two variants, priced at RM56,800 for the Prime and RM69,800 for the Premium once the RM3,000 launch rebate is applied. Power comes from a single motor that produces 79 PS (58 kW) and 130 Nm of torque on the Prime and 116 PS (85 kW) and 150 Nm on the Premium. As for batteries, the Prime utilises a 30.12 kWh CATL lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit for a range of just 225 km on the WLTP cycle, while the Premium’s 40.16 kWh pack delivers a more useful 325 km.

The pure electric models are just the start for the eMas brand – the company is set to launch the eMas 7 PHEV soon. The SUV, based on the Geely Galaxy Starship 7/Starray EM-i/EX5 EM-i, has already been previewed at last month’s Proton Tech Showcase and will feature a 218 PS/262 Nm electric motor juiced by a 99 PS/125 Nm 1.5 litre naturally-aspirated engine, along with a 18.4 kWh Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery delivering a pure electric range of 83 km.

Proton eMas 7 Android Auto arrives – OTA update also brings screen brightness adjustment, enhanced BM

Based on information posted on the Proton eMas 7 Community Malaysia Facebook group, it looks like the over-the-air (OTA) update that brings Android Auto has finally arrived for the Proton eMas 7, just in time as promised earlier this year. The above photo was posted by user ExcellentFox8322, who says the OTA will be rolled out in batches.

Besides Android Auto, this OTA (version 1.2.0) also brings screen brightness adjustment, enhanced Bahasa Melayu optimisation and “additional system optimisations” – according to ExcellentFox8322, there is now a sound when you change driving modes, so this could be one of the improvements.

Proton’s first EV model got Apple CarPlay via OTA in August. This same OTA also brought alternatives (‘Galactic Note’ and ‘Space Walk’) to the ‘ice cream truck‘ low-speed pedestrian warning sound.

    Proton eMas 7 – 7,413 units sold, including 459 exports; 10 months as Malaysia’s best-selling EV

Aside from the strong response for the recently-launched eMas 5, Proton has also announced that the larger eMas 7 continues to be Malaysia’s best-selling EV, with 7,413 units sold since it was launched in December 2024. The car has held the title for ten months straight, the national carmaker claims.

The total figure includes 6,954 units sold domestically and 459 units exported to markets such as Nepal, Trinidad and Tobago and Singapore as of October 31, contributing to the company’s target of selling 6,000 vehicles outside of Malaysia this year. It launched the eMas 7 in Mauritius, the car’s fourth export market, last month.

As good a news as this is, the eMas 7 will almost certainly not hold the crown as the country’s #1 EV for long. The new eMas 5 has assumed the mantle of Malaysia’s cheapest EV, costing a fraction of its larger sibling with prices starting from RM56,800.

The car has now amassed over 10,000 bookings since its launch on October 30, meaning that it has the potential to overtake the eMas 7’s sales in one fell swoop. And then, of course, there is the elephant in the room that is Perodua’s new EV, which may be introduced at the end of this month and provide some strong competition to both cars. Still, enjoy it while it lasts and all that.

Proton eMas 5 amasses over 10,000 bookings, 7,413 Proton eMas 7 sold as of end-Oct; Malaysia’s No 1 EV

Pro-Net has announced that the October 30-launched Proton eMas 5 has amassed over 10,000 bookings to date, while as of end-October, 7,413 Proton eMas 7s have been sold (6,954 locally, 459 abroad), cementing its position as Malaysia’s best-selling EV for the past 10 months.

“We are truly humbled by the continued support Malaysians have shown towards both the Proton eMas 7 and now, the Proton eMas 5 as well. Every booking received is the mark of trust that Malaysians have in us to deliver the eMas 5 at the highest standards. As the national automaker, we will continue to uphold our responsibility to make electric mobility more accessible and reliable,” said Pro-Net CEO Zhang Qiang.

Unsurprisingly, most of the eMas 5 orders come from the central region, followed by the southern and northern regions, while “demand from East Malaysia and the East Coast is also on an upward trend.”

The next Proton eMas model will very probably be its first model with an engine, and here’s how well Proton did as a whole last month. More on the eMas 5 here, the eMas 7 here and just in case you missed it, the 2026 Proton Saga is open for booking at an estimated RM40k-50k. Another national EV is coming very soon – and it’s not from Proton. Exciting times!

Proton eMas 7 in Mauritius – CBU China, Prime and Premium, up to 410 km WLTP, RM157k to RM172k

Proton continues its international expansion with the launch of the eMas 7 in Mauritius. The electric SUV, distributed by the Autonexx Group, arrives in the island nation in the same Prime and Premium variants as in Malaysia, priced at 1,690,000 rupees (RM157,500) and 1,850,000 rupees (RM172,100) respectively.

The first 30 customers – ten of which already received their cars at the launch ceremony in Port Louis – will receive a wallbox charger and a free card to access the country’s E-motion charging network. Those who purchase the Premium will additionally benefit from a five-year/150,000 free service package. A six-year/150,000 km warranty and an eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty come standard.

While production of the eMas 7 has already begun at Proton’s new EV plant in Tanjong Malim, the right-hand-drive units headed to Mauritius are currently being taken from the existing CBU fully-imported stock from China. The national carmaker does say that the factory, which has an eventual annual capacity of 45,000 units, is central to its export targets of 12,000 units next year and 250,000 by 2035.

Proton eMas 7 in Mauritius – CBU China, Prime and Premium, up to 410 km WLTP, RM157k to RM172k

As per the Malaysian spec, the eMas 7 is powered by a single front motor producing 218 PS (160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque, enabling it to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds (7.1 seconds for the Premium). The Prime utilises a 49.52 kWh Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for a WLTP-rated range of 345 km, while the 60.22 kWh pack in the Premium boosts range to 410 km.

Proton added it has now delivered over 6,500 units of the eMas 7 both domestically and abroad. The car is now its third most popular export model, behind only the Saga and X50.

“The introduction of the e.MAS 7 in Mauritius forms part of Proton’s ongoing strategy to expand its EV portfolio across global markets. Each new entry strengthens our international presence and reflects PROTON’s capability to deliver vehicles that balance technology, performance and value,” said Proton International Corporation (PICSB) CEO Edward Lim Meng Thong. “The EV plant in Tanjong Malim will enable Proton to develop the next generation of electric models for the world.”

Proton eMas 5 sees 3,000 bookings in first week of order taking – eMas 7 cumulative sales at 6,655 units

Proton New Energy Technology (Pro-Net), a subsidiary of Proton, has announced that it has received 3,000 bookings for the eMas 5 in the first week of order taking for the brand’s second electric vehicle (EV), which started on October 4, 2025. The company previously said 1,607 bookings were made within the first 24 hours of the estimated price reveal on that day.

With an estimated starting price of RM60,000 for the base Prime variant, the eMas 5 is poised to become Malaysia’s most affordable EV. The longer-range Premium has a tentative price of RM80,000, and Proton is offering an early bird promo for the first 5,000 customers that includes a limited-edition Touch ‘n Go NFC card with RM100 balance and an additional RM500 rebate of the booking fee.

For a brief recap of the specs, the Prime with its 30.12-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from CATL will provide up to 225 km of range following the WLTP standard. Meanwhile, the Premium’s larger 40.16-kWh battery, also from CATL, provides up to 325 km. Both variants get a rear electric motor that churns out 79 PS (78 hp or 58 kW) and 130 Nm of torque in the Prime, and 116 (114 hp or 85 kW) and 150 Nm in the Premium.

Pro-Net also mentioned that eMas 7 in its release, revealing its first EV has reached cumulative sales of 6,655 units as of September 30, 2025. From that total, 6,212 units were sold locally, with the remaining 443 units sent to export markets. The eMas 7 is the best-selling EV in Malaysia this year with a market share of 24%.

“We are in the month where two milestones were achieved – the strong sales of the Proton eMas 7 and the great interest that Malaysians have shown in the eMas 5,” said Zhang Qiang, CEO of Pro-Net. “The booking numbers exceeded our expectations. We are thankful that Malaysians continue to put their trust in us to deliver electric vehicles specifically tailored for Malaysia’s road and driving habits,” he added.

Proton eMas 7 launched in Singapore – Prime RM577k, Premium RM590k with COE; up to 410 km EV range

Following its preview in May this year, the Proton eMas 7 is now officially launched in Singapore. Sold through authorised distributor Vincar Group, the electric SUV marks the brand’s return to Singapore after an absence of over a decade.

Like Malaysia, the eMas 7 comes in two variants in Singapore, namely the Prime and Premium. The base Prime is priced at SGD175,988 (about RM577k), while the range-topping Premium goes for SGD179,888 (RM590k). According to Proton, these launch prices will be applicable to the first 99 units only – likely to be revised depending on changes to COE pricing.

These prices are inclusive of Category B COE (Certificate of Entitlement), which applies to EVs that have a total power output of more than 110 kW – below that is Category A. According to Proton, these launch prices will be applicable to the first 99 units only – likely to be revised depending on changes to COE pricing.

Regardless of variant, the eMas 7 is equipped with a front electric motor rated at 218 PS (215 hp or 160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque. A full spec sheet isn’t currently available, but the Singaporean Prime and Premium variants are identical to their Malaysian counterparts. The Prime gets a 49.52-kWh Aegis lithium iron phosphate (LFP) short blade battery for a WLTP-rated range of 345 km, while the Premium gets a 60.22-kWh unit for 410 km.

Proton eMas 7 launched in Singapore – Prime RM577k, Premium RM590k with COE; up to 410 km EV range

Both batteries can charge from 30-80% in 20 minutes via DC fast charging at 80 and 100 kW respectively, with AC charging capped at 11 kW to get the battery from 10-80% in either 4.9 hours (Prime) or 6.1 hours (Premium).

Available equipment is also shared, including LED headlamps, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.4-inch central infotainment touchscreen, Flyme Auto operating system, a head-up display, six airbags, a panoramic sunroof with sunshade, an ADAS suite and 16-speaker Flyme sound system.

As part of an introductory offer, a Founders Edition package is made available to the first 99 customers. These buyers will get a 10-year, unlimited-mileage warranty for the eMas 7’s battery as well as free five years data roaming for use in both Malaysia and Singapore.

Additionally, the package includes cross-border roadside assistance in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, meaning Singaporean owners who do require breakdown assistance within Peninsular Malaysia can get their car sent to a Malaysian Proton service centre.

The eMas 7 comes in six colours in Singapore, including Lithium White, Turquoise Green, Slate Grey, Platinum Silver, Quartz Rose and Moyu Black. These options are nearly identical to what we have in Malaysia, except our black is referred to as Obsidian Black – this was introduced in July this year. Two interior colours – Indigo Blue and Alabaster White – are also available, like our version.

“The Proton eMas 7 is the first step in Singapore for both the partnership of Proton and Vincar. We will add more models to the line-up in the future, focusing our attention on the new energy vehicle (NEV) market, which is well established in Singapore,” said Edmund Lim Meng Thong, CEO of Proton International.

Proton eMas 7 – 5,811 units delivered in first 8 months of 2025, including 356 units to four export markets

Proton New Energy Technology (Pro-Net), a subsidiary of Proton, has announced that the Proton eMas 7 is Malaysia’s best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in August 2025. Citing vehicle registration data from the road transport department (JPJ), the company said a total of 5,455 units of the electric SUV have been sold locally in the first eight months of the year.

The eMas 7 has been leading the monthly EV sales charts for eight straight months since the start of 2025, with Pro-Net stating that with a market share of 24%, nearly one in every four EVs sold is an eMas 7. Meanwhile, exports of the eMas 7 reached 356 units so far this year, with the electric SUV currently being sent to four international markets.

“We are sincerely grateful to all Proton eMas 7 owners for their trust and support. The Proton eMas 7 was built as a car for Malaysians, and we are always listening to customer feedback to make it better. This was reflected in the recent launch of new Proton eMas 7 variants in early July, which introduced over-the-air updates along with new exterior colours and interior choices,” said Zhang Qiang, CEO of Pro-Net.

Next up for the eMas 7 is delivery of locally-assembled (CKD) units following the launch of Proton’s new EV facility located in Tanjong Malim. The model was initially introduced as a fully-imported (CBU) EV from China to meet early demand.

Proton’s EV plant is situated within the Automotive High Technology Valley (AHTV) and has an initial annual capacity of 20,000 vehicles, with the ability to scale up to 45,000 units as demand grows. The eMas 7 is the first EV to be assembled there, with the upcoming eMas 5 set to be added later.

  • Proton eMas 7 now comes with free tonneau cover for existing, new customers – OTA brings Apple CarPlay

Proton eMas 7 now comes with free tonneau cover for existing, new customers – OTA brings Apple CarPlay

When the Proton eMas 7 was lightly updated in July, Pro-Net said the car would now come standard with a tonneau cover worth RM300, and this is it. Done in response to customer feedback, the tonneau cover is free for existing and new customers.

Finished in carbon print, with a prominent Proton eMas logo on the lower right flap, the unit does look aftermarket in relation to the rest of the car, but it solves the issue of privacy, because if you regularly store valuables in the boot, at least you can now hide them from view.

The omission isn’t unique to the eMas 7. The upcoming Proton eMas 5 will also launch without a tonneau cover – it’s quite likely that the automaker will do a retrofit upgrade for that too.

Proton has also rolled out Apple CarPlay (Android Auto coming soon) and alternatives to the ‘ice cream truck‘ low-speed pedestrian warning sound via over-the-air (OTA) updates. There should now be ‘Galactic Note’ and ‘Space Walk’ options in addition to ‘Classical’.

    Proton eMas 7 deliveries in 1H 2025 reach 4,003 units – still Malaysia’s best-selling EV, 250 units exported

The Proton eMas 7 continues to be Malaysia’s best-selling electric vehicle, with Pro-Net announcing that cumulative deliveries of the SUV in the first half of the year reached 4,003 units. The company delivered 604 units last month, which is down on the 862 units that found homes in May, but still at the top of the EV heap.

Put in another way, Proton has long since surpassed the 3,000 unit threshold it originally had for the eMas 7’s launch promo, although this was almost immediately extended and eventually made indefinite. Perhaps even more impressive is that the carmaker has now exported over 250 units since the car’s first international launch in Nepal, including the latest expansion to Trinidad and Tobago.

The eMas 7 was updated in Malaysia earlier this month with the introduction of a new Obsidian Black paint option and a limited run (just 250 units) of the much-requested Alabaster White interior colour scheme. The car is also set to gain a tonneau cover and an over-the-air update that adds Apple CarPlay and removes the “ice cream truck” pedestrian warning sound.

Pricing holds steady at RM105,800 for the Prime and RM119,800 for the Premium; again, this lower price will now be applied indefinitely. Power comes from a 218 PS/320 Nm front motor juiced by a 49.52 kWh Aegis “short blade” lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery on the Prime and a 60.22 kWh pack on the Premium, delivering a WLTP-rated range of 345 km and 410 km respectively.

Geely Auto Indonesia has a new promotion for the Geely EX5, but it’s not a price cut like in Thailand. Instead, the Proton eMas 7 twin gets an ‘EXceptional Value Deals’ package that includes lifetime battery warranty.

There are terms and conditions attached to the lifetime battery warranty, of course. For one, there’s a mileage cap of 30,000 km a year, which translates to an average use of 2,500 km a month – as EVs are unlikely to be heavily used for long distance driving, this shouldn’t be much of an issue. You’ll get a battery change if state of health falls below 70%.

The warranty is also reserved for the first owner of the EX5. This means that it’s not transferable, and the EV will not become ‘more valuable’ as a second-hand car. Battery aside, the Geely EX5 comes with an eight-year or 180,000 km warranty for the electric motor and motor control system. There’s also free emergency roadside assistance for five years.

Apart from warranties, the promo package also includes a free portable charger, a 7 kW wallbox or OEM accessories package, front seats with massage function and adjustable leg rest, and exclusive colour options for the top-spec Max variant. There’s more – 0% interest rates for one year (or subsidy on home charger installation) and 2GB of free data for two years.

Launched in January this year, the Geely EX5 comes in two variants for the republic – the Rp 475 juta (RM123,952) Pro and the Rp 515 juta (RM134,390) Max. Both come with a front electric motor rated at 218 PS (160 kW) and 320 Nm, paired to a 60.22 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The quoted NEDC range is 495 km for the Pro and 490 km for the Max.

Trial production of the EV started in May at contract manufacturer PT Handal Indonesia Motor’s plant in Purwakarta, with mass production targeted for Q4 2025. Geely said that it plans to launch between five and seven models in Indonesia over the next three years, including full EVs, plug-in hybrids and ICE-powered models.

For those who aren’t yet convinced by EVs, would a lifetime battery warranty programme like this sway you?

Geely to enter UK in fourth quarter of 2025 with EX5 EV SUV – Proton eMas 7 twin to get ‘Handling by Lotus’?

The Brits love their handling, and doesn’t Geely know it. The Chinese giant is going to enter the UK in the fourth quarter of this year with the EX5 (or Galaxy E5 or Proton eMas 7 depending on where you’re from), and the EV SUV may get Lotus-tuned handling thanks to a collaboration with Lotus Engineering, reports various British publications including Car Magazine and Top Gear.

“We know the Geely EX5 is a great product with several core features that will appeal to a British audience. That’s why we chose it to be our first passenger car for sale in the UK. However, we’re aware that UK customers have unique demands,” said Geely Auto UK boss Mike Yang.

“For that reason, before we release the car for sale, we’re working with the experts at Lotus Engineering to make sure we have a car that’s in line with expectations. Lotus Engineering has a formidable track record along with some of the best R&D resources, so we’re delighted to be working closely with them.”

Lotus Engineering is a division within Lotus that provides engineering and consultancy services to other automotive manufacturers to carry out engineering work including suspension and handling tuning – think Isuzu Piazza, Lotus Cortina and Lotus Carlton/Omega, besides the string of Protons we grew up with. Proton owned Lotus from 1996 to 2017.

This Euro NCAP, ANCAP and ASEAN NCAP five-star EV SUV (no matter what name it goes by) was apparently co-developed with Proton. Geely said last year that global-market models will use Proton-tuned suspension, but it was reported earlier this year that Australia would get its own tuning – and now, Britain.

UK specs are not known yet, but they shouldn’t differ much from the rest of the world. In Thailand, the range-topping EX5 Max just had its price cut to 899k baht (RM117k) after a series of reductions from the original 989k baht (RM129k). Proton recently said it won’t be joining the price war in Malaysia in a bid to protect resale values – even though it arguably started the war in the first place by significantly undercutting the BYD Atto 3. It has, however, decided to make the RM4,000 ‘early bird discount’ permanent.

2025 Proton eMas 7 gets new Obsidian Black exterior, Alabaster White interior options, OTA Apple CarPlay

The Proton X50 facelift may be on everyone’s lips today, but Proton’s Pro-Net division has something to unveil too – this is the updated 2025 Proton eMas 7, which comes with a couple of meaningful changes from the electric SUV that surfaced late last year and has since gone on to top the EV sales chart. The changes are ‘guided by real owner feedback’.

First up, no, this is not the CKD locally-assembled eMas 7, as Proton’s EV plant at its Tanjong Malim base for that purpose is only scheduled to be ready by end-2025. As it was since day one, the updated EV is a CBU import from China.

With that cleared, let’s move to the changes. The Proton eMas 7 is now equipped with (wired and wireless) Apple CarPlay. Yes, iOS users, you can finally say goodbye to that unsightly phone holder, which has no place in a car with such screen acreage. The X70 facelift was the first Proton model to receive Apple Carplay in October 2024 (via OTA, car was launched in August 2024) and in April this year, Proton’s over-the-air (OTA) roadmap for the eMas 7 pointed to July for Apple CarPlay. We’re now in July and here it is. Android user feeling left out? Android Auto connectivity will appear in Q4 2024.

AACP aside, the Flyme Auto operating system now offers better responsiveness, smoother integration, and support for more third party apps, Pro-Net says. The apps include Zoom for Cars, izi.Travel and Vivaldi Browser. More significantly, the OTA update will allow drivers to retain their last-used settings; currently, drivers have to manually adjust certain settings at the start of each drive.

Also, the updated eMas 7 will have updates to its EV low speed pedestrian warning system. If you don’t already know, EVs are designed to emit an artificial sound at low speeds so that pedestrians will be aware of their presence, and the eMas 7’s soundtrack is akin to an ice-cream truck’s jingle. It’s very much audible in an otherwise silent cabin – probably the most intrusive we’ve encountered in an EV.

Now, this sound can be switched off (manually, each time you start up), and there are two more new tones that are presumably more subtle than the ‘Classical’ ice-cream truck music – Galactic Note and Space Walk. Once selected, the chosen melody remains in memory for the next vehicle start-up. The OTA will be rolling out from July 21.

Next up, we have colours. The eMas 7 was launched with Platinum Silver, Turquoise Green, Slate Grey, Lithium White and Quartz Rose colour options – now, Obsidian Black joins the list. In May, we noted that black is an option for the eMas 7 in Singapore (called Moyu Black there), and it’s now available here too.

While the rather nice Indigo Blue interior (appears black most of the time) remains default, Pro-Net is offering an Alabaster White interior option for the Quartz Rose and Turquoise Green exterior colours of the Premium. Limited to 250 units each, here’s a chance to have a slightly different eMas 7 – at the same price.

Last but definitely not least in terms of daily practicality, the eMas 7 will now come standard with a tonneau cover that Pro-Net says is worth RM300. A glaring omission at launch, existing owners soon will receive the tonneau cover free of charge – updates to come.

No changes in price, which is RM105,800 for the Prime and RM119,800 for the Premium on-the-road excluding insurance, inclusive of a RM4,000 ‘Welcome Benefit’. Pro-Net is also offering a new ‘Power Pack+’ sales package that includes a free 7kW wallbox home charger worth RM1,500, a complimentary V2L adaptor worth RM500, five-years of unlimited internet data worth RM1,800 and a ‘power exchange’ trade-in rebate worth RM5,000. The latter is open to all makes and models.

The car comes with a six-year unlimited mileage warranty for the vehicle, plus an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty for the EV battery.

Both variants share a front-mounted electric motor with 218 PS (160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque, propelling the fastest-accelerating Proton ever to from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds (7.1 seconds for the Premium). Top speed is 175 km/h.

As per the Geely Galaxy E5, Prime uses a 49.52 kWh version of Geely’s Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for a WLTP-rated range of 345 km. The Premium’s 60.22 kWh pack delivers 410 km. Both support AC charging at a max rate of 11 kW but the max DC rate differs – 80 kW for the Prime and 100 kW for the Premium. Both can get from 30-80% SoC in 20 minutes (note the 30% base Proton uses). Home charging via the AC wallbox takes 4.9 hours for the Prime and 6.1 hours for the Premium.

Speaking of charging, the eMas 7 – like its Pro-Net siblings from the smart brand – has live charging map integration in its infotainment system, featuring over 1,700 chargers or 85% of all chargers in Malaysia, and you’ll get real-time info such as gun availability and pricing too.

Kit highlights include a 10.2-inch digital instrument display and a 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen running on Geely’s latest Flyme Auto operating system, as well as the Premium’s 16-speaker Flyme Sound system. And for the first time on a Proton, the eMas 7 comes as standard with a full suite of driver assistance features, including Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

The eMas 7 is a lot of car for the money (literally too; the C-segment SUV is 89 mm longer and 70 mm wider than the Proton X70, and Proton claims D-segment space), and these changes should further enhance its popularity. Check out our full review here.
