The record-breaking “H” number plate series – which raked in RM91.2 million for JPJ, the highest ever for a single registration series – will end up giving back to the very trade the letter once represented. Transport minister Anthony Loke says the ministry will use its share of the proceeds to help taxi and rental car drivers across the country.
In a Facebook post, Loke explained the split: half of the RM91.2 million goes into the Federal Consolidated Revenue Account, while the other half will fund the transport ministry’s people-oriented initiatives.
And there’s a neat bit of history guiding where that second half goes. The H prefix was originally the registration marking for taxis – Malaysian taxi plates have long begun with H, for “hire” – and Loke says that with the series generating such a handsome return, the ministry will channel the money into helping taxi and hire car drivers nationwide.
What form that help takes will be revealed soon. “There will be good news for taxi drivers next week,” Loke wrote.
The move would extend the ministry’s recent run of taxi-focused programmes, most visibly Teksi Madani, the taxi renewal scheme that has put red Proton S70 cabs on roads across the country, most recently expanding to Sabah. Notably, the announcement will land after Loke said he would resign as transport minister – he indicated then that outstanding work would be completed in an orderly handover, and this appears to be part of it.
As a recap, the Malaysia Day-themed H series was open for bidding via JPJeBid from September 16-20, with H 1 alone fetching a record RM10,777,777.

This is what we want, the proceeds to help ordinary Malaysians. Well done Tony! You will be missed. It’s unfortunate that majority of Malaysians only care about race and religion.
He hasn’t resigned. He “offered to resign”.
In political speak, it is a postulation. You say you want to leave on a matter of principle; then you make some positive announcements to make the position of resigning “untenable” to the powers that be, and to some gullible electorate. Remember one UMNO PAU some years ago when someone fearfully said he was leaving his posts both in the government and the party?
The “positive” items here is the amount the “H” tender generated, next week you will announce the scheme for taxi drivers. It is all just shadow play, or “wayang”.
If you say you are against the house arrest of the PM, as I am too, then you resign outright. You show you are a man of principles. You do the right thing. Essentially you will tender your resignation, serve your notice period to tie the loose ends, and leave with dignity.
All this “wayang” will dent your resume. You have done a decent job to be honest. But politics is a strange game. Just as they make strange bedfellows, it also makes for stranger politicians.
just say low iq retarded malays blinded by religion, why keep beating around the bush??
Previously under the BN government, taxi drivers had to rent the taxi from middlemen (UMNO cronies). I don’t want to go too depth into it, but basically the middlemen made money off the backs of the taxi driver by doing nothing. The taxi drivers had to pay them a monthly fee which was usually very high and they don’t even own the vehicle (taxi)
They didn’t do nothing. They risks capital to buy cars and face depreciation and repairs. Only thing is the monopoly and the high prices which turned majority of taxi drivers into vultures
