Not all roads are suitable for cycling, particularly highways designed to accommodate motor vehicles travelling at high speeds, says police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT). JSPT reminded cyclists to understand where cycling is permitted and where it is prohibited, while also being aware of the risks involved should an accident occur.
A JSPT infographic highlighted several dangers faced by cyclists on high-speed roads, including the significant difference in speed between bicycles and motor vehicles. A minor mistake or momentary lapse in attention can result in a serious accident, while collisions on highways could lead to severe injuries or even death.
“Do not put your life at risk simply because you want to continue your ride,” JSPT said in a reminder to cyclists. Cyclists are also urged to comply with traffic regulations, use appropriate safety equipment and respect other road users at all times, police saying cycling is a shared right and responsibility.
Acknowledging cycling is a healthy activity, while being cost efficient, environmentally friendly and reducing road traffic, police said cyclists should always practice road safety and avoid highways and expressways, avoid riding on flyovers, and disrupting traffic. Penalties pertinent to cyclists include Section 54(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for dangerous or reckless riding with a fine of between RM1,000 to RM5,000, or 12 months jail.
Also applicable is Section 79(2) of the same Act, with a fine of between RM300 to RM2,000 for failing to obey posted road signs. Cyclists are further reminded authorities can seize their bicycles under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
JSPT stressed there is no compromise on any actions that endanger the safety of other road users. The reminder comes as cycling continues to be a popular recreational and fitness activity in Malaysia, with cyclists advised to choose routes that are appropriate and safe for two-wheeled use rather than roads designed primarily for high-speed motor traffic.

There should be a law allowing Police to shoot cyclists at sight. Bloody menace, parasites.
so many don’ts might as well just cycle on Zwift or MyWhoosh. no one is gonna make noise.
sediakanlah tempat khas, kena bayar pun tak apa macam di BANGKOK sana: Sky Lane or Suvarnabhumi Cycle Park
The greatest risk of light weight vehicles sharing space with high speed travel is NOT SPEED. Just because speed is a visible and quantifiable vector, it is routinely cited as the causative factor. Truth is speed can be controlled, and good brains combined and patience can make cycling safe on any segregated thoroughfare, eg an emergency lane.
The REAL DANGER of cycling on highways is really wind gusts. Winds can be from nature. Gusts WILL be churned by traffic. Winds can come from any direction. And winds are NOT visible. Cyclists can only react to winds. Winds can cause cyclists to go off track or lose control of their vehicle. Even heavy vehicles can fall victim to crosswinds. Winds terrorise pilots landing their big birds.
Do not for a moment assume that just because you can control speed, any where is safe for you.
What about those runners running on roads? or against traffic running? got proper pedestrian walk path still choose ignore to use. Is police able to issue summons to those jokers?
Just enforce the law. The SPRINT highway is almost always with cyclists cycling in packs which is very dangerous. Maybe it’s hard to enforce the law on rich people and expats….
Its always nice to give reminders without including information on which roads are allowed to be used. Its 2026, if Ai was used to generate the infographic above, it most certainly can also generate the correct info on which roads are able to be used by cyclists.
Also a little forward thinking / consideration when it comes to cycling as a sports should be taken, most of the time this cyclist always cycle in groups ranging as small as 2 people all the way to 20+, Malaysian are trying to get healthy but unfortunately current infrastructure does not comply, then the question is what is the solution?
Bangkok boleh ada tempat khas untuk kayuh sini ada ramai juara berbasikal tapi tiada tempat khursus untuk berlatih
Cannot cycles in the park?
