The works ministry will seek additional funding for road maintenance after receiving RM2 billion against an estimated RM4 billion requirement, reported New Straits Times.
Deputy works minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan has said that he will join works minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi as well as senior ministry officials in a meeting with the second finance minister to seek additional allocation.
“We need RM4 billion, but we only received RM2 billion. This afternoon we will ask for more,” Ahmad Maslan said today. The ministry had to prioritise maintenance works based on available funds, particularly at accident black spots and locations requiring urgent repairs, the deputy works minister said.
“We prioritise black spots, places where accidents frequently occur, so that we can carry out maintenance properly,” he said, adding that the works included resurfacing, maintaining road furniture and improving lighting at locations where necessary.
Meanwhile, the RM2 billion allocation would be fully spent on maintenance, and the ministry is unable to set aside funds due to the extent of the repairs required. Road conditions accounted for about 13% of accidents, compared with 81% attributed to human negligence and 7% due to vehicle conditions, he said.
While the works ministry had received 3,000 new lights this year through the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) to improve lighting along highways, the actual requirement was greater, Ahmad Maslan said.

JKR need to focus on road engineering. i noticed there are roads segments that require regular re-pavement primarily due to flooding during downpour. the road segment had poor drainage or wrong engineering to disperse rain water. i noticed our roads becomes river during downpour. so the engineer need to turn padang and understand the problem and recommend solution. otherwise keep pre-paving the same stretch multiple times
Why not you prioritise how and where the money is spent? Sudah lepas 2020 and our standard of road resurfacing is still just to tampal over the old asphalt including whatever lubang was there. No wonder potholes reappear after heavy rain or heavy vehicle goes over it. After all the cronies in the middle take their cut, the final subsubsubsubcon takes maybe 0.001% of the total and so they just tampal. Next year you all will ask for RM 8 billion. Never ending lah
I remember our MoW had once come out with a decision that the high traffic roads are to be constructed with concrete since our country (at that time) has abundance of cement and they last long too. Shall we revisit that decision to save the never-ending asphalt maintenance cost?

RM2b is enough to repair roads where most of the taxpayers stay. those neighbourhood that majority don’t pay tax, no need to repair first until the funds come in.
