The transport ministry will have discussions with e-hailing companies to study extra safety measures for drivers, including the suggestion of cabin dashcams, following a recent spate of attacks on drivers.
Minister Anthony Loke said that in-car cameras in e-hailing vehicles is a suggestion to increase safety for drivers, but the implementation needs to be studied to take into account passenger privacy.
“From the safety aspect, we will discuss with the companies to find extra measures that can be done to protect drivers. The safety of the passenger and driver are equally important, so we must find a right balance,” Loke said in Sepang yesterday, reported by Astro Awani.
This issue is being discussed following a couple of recent cases where e-hailing drivers have been allegedly assaulted by passengers. On June 11, police arrested a man and a woman in a case of robbery and assault of an e-hailing driver in Kota Tinggi, Johor. A day later on June 12, it was reported that three foreigners attacked a driver after he told them off for making too much noise in Skudai, Johor.

You have no right to privacy if you take up an e-haling service, much like you have no right to privacy at any public infrastructure. e-Hailing is a service for pay for the public and should be treated as such. If your pretty face is aww so secret needing cuddling and hidden away, then GTFO of the the roads and drive your own vehicle.

If an in-cabin dashcam is a deal-breaker, don’t use e-hailing. You’re getting into a stranger’s car, not a private space.
The camera protects both the driver and the passenger. If something happens, at least there is some evidence instead of stories or lies. That’s for safety and accountability.
Siapa pun boleh naik sebab tiada eky IC/pasport pada penumpang. PATI pun boleh juga tiada halangan di BolehLand
A dashcam does not prevent it from happening. It just makes it more easier for authorities to identify the perpetrator. As a grab driver we do not know who is getting into the car. The eho ask pax to send their own picture to them but this is not shared with drivers. And I have picked up pax with fake names like iPhone, batman etc. I have also picked up passengers who had someone else book a ride for them.
Just do a quick Google search .. there are more drivers being murdered by pax in Malaysia than the other way. But hey safety of pax is paramount. 1 driver die? Next day 10 more apply to be driver
What about public buses, trains and such? They have cameras in the cabin? If want to dispute, dispute all. Grab drivers are doing such to protect themselves and easier to catch if crimes are convicted. It’s called a public transport remember. No such thing as privacy if you’re riding on a public transport.
Privacy? Bas, lrt etc?
Walaupun sy amat jarang sekali naik grab, tapi pd hemat sy keselamatan driver tu penting. Kalau passenger kata privacy, pervert driver atau apa jua alasan, passenger boleh je report terus pd grab/polis. Atau pergi jalan kaki shj la, byk songeh je passenger, da la menumpang di kereta orang.
X tahu malu, da la miskin tapi byk perangai pula. Nak ngada2, private chauffeur ada je kalau mampu la kan. Lmfao
Tangkap driver lagi senang (sbb details semua ada di grab), drpd nak tangkap penumpang.
