Proton continues to dominate when it comes to electric vehicle (EV) registrations this year. According to the latest data from the road transport department (JPJ) for the month ending April 2026, a total of 2,408 Proton EVs were registered last month.
This result brings Proton’s year-to-date (YTD) tally to 9,863 units and it looks like that brand is poised to cross into five figures and exceed what it managed last year. For context, the total number of Proton EVs registered for the whole of 2025 was 8,890 units, which was only good enough for a second-place finish behind BYD with 14,407 units.
On the mention of BYD, the popular Chinese EV brand trailed Proton in second place in April 2026 with 1,413 units, which marks a 60% increase and its highest single-month result so far this year for a YTD total of 3,674 units.
Coming in third is iCaur with 547 units (1,549 YTD), while Zeekr claimed the fourth spot with 357 units (1,214 YTD). Both are the only brands to breach the 1,000-unit mark in terms of YTD registrations so far, although they will likely be joined by others in the coming months.
Tesla in fifth is one brand on that path, with 172 units registered in April for a YTD total of 830 units. It is followed by Xpeng in sixth with 150 units, the brand’s best single-month result in 2026 for a YTD tally of 394 units.
Leapmotor improved upon its March result to climb to seventh in April with 108 units (429 YTD), while MG saw a dip to 92 units (579 YTD) to be in eighth. Completing the top ten are TQ Wuling in ninth with 91 units (241 YTD) and MINI in tenth with 81 units (160 YTD).
In 11th place is BMW, which saw yet another month-over-month increase in registrations to 73 units in April for a YTD total of 212 units. Great Wall Motor narrowly misses out on BMW’s position with 70 units (177 YTD), so it settles for 12th place.
Meanwhile, Volvo occupied the 13th spot with 53 units (217 YTD) and is followed closely by a first appearance by Perodua. Deliveries of the QV-E, the brand’s first and only EV, saw a significant increase to 52 units in April and brought Perodua’s YTD total to 64 units.
Next up, we have Denza in 15th with 45 units (144 YTD), while Toyota makes its first appearance in the top 20 list this year with 40 units (42 YTD) in April for 16th place. The remaining four brands are Dongfeng in 17th with 31 units (123 YTD), smart in 18th with 26 units (107 YTD), Neta in 19th with 18 units (64 YTD) and Chery in 20th with 15 units (44 YTD).

The total sales for the Top 20 EV brands from January to April 2026 stands at 20,254 units (YTD)— This signifies the shift toward higher technological demand.
Meanwhile, by April 2026, Vietnam had already sold more than 70,000 EVs, and Thailand had sold over 60,000 EVs, India also had sold over 70,000 EVs.

MITI must protect Proton and Perodua from foreign EVs. Thank you Johari for doing your job and protecting our local EVs and jobs. Please consider raising the ceiling price for CBU to RM500k CIF to ensure even rich people will buy local EVs instead of BYD or Tesla.
