Top 20 EV brands in 2025 – BYD 1st with 14k; Proton under 9k; Tesla close 3rd; Zeekr beats Xpeng, Denza

BYD registered the most electric vehicles (EVs) in 2025, according to data from the road transport department (JPJ). With a total of 14,407 EVs registered, BYD was truly well and ahead of other brands, many of which saw an increase in registrations in the final month before the tax holiday ended for fully-imported (CBU) EVs.

Coming in second place is Proton, with the eMas 7 doing almost all of the heavy lifting to post the numbers throughout the year. The brand’s second EV offering, the eMas 5, contributed a small amount to the overall total of 8,890 units, which is 5,517 less than BYD.

Joining BYD and Proton on the podium is Tesla, which saw its highest number of EV registrations in December 2025 to bring its final tally for the year to 7,282 units. The gap between Proton and Tesla is smaller compared to BYD at just 1,708 units.

Outside the top three and in fourth is Zeekr, which saw 2,560 units registered for the year, the majority of which being the 7X. The premium Chinese brand outperformed other such as Xpeng (fifth; 1,536 units) and Denza (seventh; 1,200 units), the former narrowly beating out BMW that occupied sixth with 1,493 units.

Late to the game but posting strong results is iCaur, which took the eighth spot with 879 units despite only launching its first model, the 03, in September. The 03 made up the bulk of iCaur vehicles registered in the year, as the brand’s second model, the V23, only went on sale in November. Porsche took the ninth spot with 739 units, although this figure likely includes those sold by recon dealers. Completing the top ten is MINI with 672 units.

In the second half of the top 20 list, we find Chery in 11th with 658 units. This is followed by MG in 12th with 624 units, while Mercedes-Benz trailed closely behind with 617 units to take the 13th spot. Below the 600-unit mark, we find Volvo with 534 units for 14th, while Leapmotor took 15th place with 516 units.

The final five brands in the top 20 list are Great Wall Motor in 16th with 446 units. GWM, like most brands, saw its highest number of registrations in December 2025. The same is true of smart, which recorded its first triple-digit registration last month to bring its end-year total to 414 units, good for 17th place.

As for brands that did not crack 300 units but managed to make it to the top 20, there is Dongfeng in 18th with 213 units, followed by Maxus (175 units) and Neta (171 units).
