It’s been a good long while since we had a new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, but it looks like a next-generation model is finally on the horizon. The Triton-based SUV made an appearance in Mitsubishi’s year-end video celebrating its rally history – set to Eric Clapton’s iconic song Layla, no less.
Here, the company reminisces its success in the World Rally Championship (WRC) and Paris-Dakar Rally, before highlighting its efforts in the Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) with the Triton – including a win at the most recent instalment in 2025. At the end, a shot of the Pajero Evolution rally raid car fades to reveal a still-camouflaged SUV, almost certainly the new Pajero Sport
Although still shrouded in disguise and darkness, the car appears to have a markedly different design compared to the latest fourth-generation Triton. It’s even boxier and more upright, with T-shaped headlights and a large grille drawing inspiration from other Mitsubishi SUVs such as the Xforce and Destinator.
Not much in the way of details is known, but according to Australian publication CarExpert, the new model is rumoured to drop the “Sport” suffix, positioning it as a successor to the full-sized Pajero that was discontinued in 2021. This would make sense, as a return to the flagship 4×4 market is unlikely given the shrinking demand and the presence of alliance partner Nissan.
Expect the car to inherit the Triton’s 2.4 litre 4N16 turbodiesel, available in single- or twin-turbo variants with outputs of 184 PS and 204 PS respectively. A six-speed automatic gearbox and Mitsubishi’s Super Select II four-wheel drive system should also be on the cards. Hopefully, this generation will be offered in Malaysia, as our market was given a miss the last time around.
