Honda 0 Alpha EV prototype debuts in Tokyo – entry-level SUV on sale in 2027, Japan and India first

Greetings from Tokyo, where the Japan Mobility Show (JMS) 2025 has just kicked off. Honda is debuting two electric vehicle prototypes at the show as part of its transition into electrification. One of these is the Honda 0 α (Alpha) next-generation EV.

The new model builds on the automaker’s 0 Series, presently made up of the Honda 0 Saloon and the large Honda 0 SUV, which were both introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, and is being added to the range as an entry-level offering, with the company touting a refined design and a spacious cabin that offers outstanding occupant comfort as key highlights.

No technical details were revealed, save that the Honda 0 α would be equipped with technologies that embody the Honda 0 Series development approach of “Thin, Light, and Wise,” which would mean the car should have the new Asimo OS, Level 3 semi-autonomous driving capability and dedicated electric platform of its more upmarket siblings.

Some aspects of the “Thin” approach were highlighted. By applying a packaging design based on this element, the automaker said it was able to achieve a low vehicle height without compromising ground clearance, with the result being a thin cabin that still offers a spacious and comfortable space for occupants. Additionally, the wide stance of the vehicle expresses stability and dynamic characteristics unique to SUVs.

There’s certainly no shortage of mass, especially at the rear, where an elongated C-pillar runs into an almost vertical rear end, giving the Honda 0 α a rather unique shape when viewed from the back. Screen areas house the lighting elements, both at the front and rear.

At the front, components that are conventionally separated, such as the headlights, charging lid and illuminated emblem, are integrated into a screen area, while the rear features a U-shaped lighting array that combines the tail lamps, backup lamps and turn signal lamps, helping to accentuate the contour of the rear screen area.

The Honda 0 α is one of seven new 0 Series models planned to be launched by 2030, and it will follow in the footsteps of the larger 0 SUV, due out in the market next year, with the production model scheduled to go on sales globally in 2027, with Japan and India the first markets to receive it. Given its entry-level pinnings, we could expect to see it come our way eventually. What do you think of the Honda 0 α? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

Range and price will determine if this succeeds or not. Entry level doesn’t mean people are willing to compromise on range. If anything, buyers of entry level vehicles have less access to charging infrastructure (non-landed homes) and will need their cars to go as far as possible between charging stations.
