The MyKad reader terminal used for determining eligibility for a subsidised RON95 price that’s expected to be RM1.99 per litre that was featured in a video that went viral last week will not be the only method used in the new RON95 fuel subsidy system, says Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, according to Bernama.
He elaborated that additional methods such as oil company payment apps can also be used, so the public need not worry about facing difficulties in buying subsidised petrol, giving examples such as Petronas’ Setel app and the Shell app.
In the video that went viral last week, a staff at a petrol station uses the reader terminal to access a page to determine eligibility, after which a MyKad is inserted.
After a few seconds to (presumably) contact PADU, the terminal will reveal if the individual is eligibly for subsidised RON 95 petrol. A blue tag show eligibility, while a red one indicates either a filled quota or ineligibility.
Following this, an order is created and the customer indicates the amount of RON 95 needed before payment is made.
In its August 2025, the finance ministry had said that in addition to the MyKad, other mechanisms under consideration include e-wallets as well as oil company apps, so news that oil company payment apps will also be able to be used is not exactly a new thing.
At present, account verification/e-KYC (submitting photos of your MyKad and face) is required for such apps as part of the wallet feature, so there should be no issue tying each account to the MyKad number where the government’s database can be checked on the eligibility to purchase subsidised RON95.
If you wish to prepare yourself with the payment apps of each oil company in order to avoid having to use the physical terminal method of checking your MyKad, you can download each app below:
List of Oil Company apps in Malaysia
Petronas – Setel – Apple App Store | Google Play
Shell – Shell App – Apple App Store | Google Play
Caltex – CaltexGO – Apple App Store | Google Play
BHPetrol – BHPetrol eCard – Apple App Store | Google Play
Petron – Petron Malaysia App – Apple App Store | Google Play
So far, only the Petronas, Shell and Caltex apps have payment features, while the BHPetrol and Petron apps are loyalty apps, but if this is the way things are going, payment features might eventually be added to them so no harm downloading them first.
Looking to sell your car? Sell it with Carro.
thank goodness.
This sounds great, but in a hilariously roundabout way, it feels like Malaysians practically need to download five different apps just to tap into the petrol subsidy. Sure, everyone has their preferred fuel company, but we all end up juggling multiple ones anyway, because you never know when you’ll run out of fuel and have to frantically hunt down the nearest subsidized station before your tank hits empty!
I believe you can still go to the counter under the “emergency” situation as in your example, no?
give you plethora of many options u still complain . let u use apps, let u scan IC at counter , let u pay directly at the pump if u dont want subsidy . better just migrate overseas, u think other country govt will give u petrol subsidy.
seriously? u dont know when your vehicle run of fuel..we not talking about ev, no?
Why so complicated if Rafizi & PMX fulfilled their janji above?

eh eh i thought quota and subisides is the favorite permintaan of m type, skrng bagi subsidy korang komplen plak, ni mmmg bagi betis mintak peha
What a mess…as usual.
Most important thing is the quota. Many are in sales line or houses are far from the office. So, please dont scam Malaysians that petrol price go down by 6 cents per litre and at the end have to pay more because not enough for usage.
Does the gomen need to subsidize your business car use? House is far, sell it and move nearer. Everything is a cost benefit. I live in central KL and never will move far out from city because even 10 years ago i decided I’m not paying for more petrol and toll and not wasting my time sitting in car when i can use efficient public transport in the city.
x henti2 mintak tongkat , let me guess what type is he
Confirm C
Just remove subsidies
semua petrol app nak kena dload pulak. mat spin tongong madanon gayboy je suka
minta pergi kaunter – kompelin
bagi pakai app – kompelin
pakai mesin kan pam – kompelin
harga petrol naik – kompelin
harga petrol turun – kompelin
now with petrol so darn cheap everyone can afford to drive and massive traffic jam everywhere, correct or not plainbs?
i guess jamal jamban prefer to have expensive petrol, no apps, and prefer to have mahathir or badawi or muyyiddin as PM .

Jpj has the data. Mercs bmw Audi porsche Bentley etc etc should be excluded. Num plate recognition is easily available, each private car should be allocated only 100 litres of subsidized petrol every 30 days. They can easily detect local owners v non, affordable essential cars vs luxury cars. No need to reply about leakage, every system has leakage, the aim is to target assistance. Ideally remove all subsidies just give cash. The issue here is fuel usage needs to be disincentivised, not encouraged more. I drive a Merc but i use the bus mrt lrt everyday to push myself to be sustainable.
it kind of doesnt make sense in certain cases wwhere a singapore-registered car owned by malaysian who works in singapore is entitled to subsidy, but a local registered car driven by expat working here isnt entitled.
expats cant vote…
expats pay malaysian taxes and buy local car. malaysian who work in sngapore buy singapore registered car and pay taxes to singapore.
Expected these comments of weird cases that are so few and far between yet some genius think they need to mention their smart idea
few and far between, only a katak bawah tempurung would say that . there are a massive numbers of foreigners (white collar expats, laborers, postgraduate students, etc) residing in malaysia, and equally large number of malaysians residing in singapore.
This is why you reside in the comment section workout being useful
i hope you see the irony in that because you are also reside in the comment section.
Boon to station, people will fill full their tanks for obvious reason
