The Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4², an extreme version of the G-Class, has been confirmed for production. It was presented at this year’s Geneva show in ‘near production’ form, so the green light is mere formality.
The G500 4×4² is similar to the even madder G63 AMG 6×6, but swaps the six-wheeler’s pick-up body for a traditional wagon style while reverting to just four wheels and two axles. It keeps the wider track (+299 mm) and jacked-up suspension of the 6×6 though, and comes with portal axles, three lockable-on-the-move differentials and 22-inch wheels. Ground clearance? 450 mm with a fording depth of 1,000 mm!
The G500 4×4² is powered by a 4.0 litre biturbo V8 engine with 422 hp and 610 Nm of torque. The Euro 6 engine is based on the unit that powers the C63 AMG and AMG GT sports car. Speaking of that, Mercedes throws in mentions of ‘sports car’ and ‘high-powered rally car’ when describing the Sport mode of the G500 4×4²’s adjustable damping, so it handles on tarmac too, apparently.
This monster truck will go on sale in Europe from December 2015.
